1.) Cognitive Surplus is a great read, but sometimes it was a little confusing to me. I totally understand the concept, but I think it is a broad issue. The basis for the “surplus” part is this- we as a society spend too much time on things that shouldn’t matter, like the internet or watching TV. These types of behaviors are viewed as societal, but they effect us all. The book is very thought provoking and has made me take a look at how I spend each hour of my day, and to also that I should not get caught up in things like social media purely because it seems “real”.
2.) I think the way that this book connects to ENT is that to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to work 3x as hard as you think. I think that concentrating on things that will make me successful is important, and nothing about sitting in front of a tv for hours is productive.
3.) The exercise I would do for this class is for students to write down and analyze how they spend each hour they are awake each day. The study would be for an entire week, and I think students would be astounded by the times that they spend on mindless activities.
4.) I think my biggest surprise was just thinking about my own situation. Let’s start small. An iPhone calculates your screen time, and what you are spending the most time in. I think that if things like facebook or youtube are your main time consumers than I clearly would need to make some adjustments and set aside some of the time I would spend on that on doing something productive. It’s actually scary when it’s all calculated without you knowing, and I certainly need to make some adjustments.
