5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

1.)  Title - Disney : Rides at Hollywood Studios working again - From the Orlando Sentinel

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/tourism/os-bz-disney-hollywood-studios-update-cooling-20180713-story.html

Situation - This article documents that a few rides were shut down at Disney's Hollywood Studios due to cooling issues with the ride systems. The article mentions that some of the newest rides were also affected by this issue, and I'm sure that is not a huge crowd-pleaser. The article also mentions that Hollywood Studios is sometimes overshadowed by the other parks at the resort, but that other major lands are under construction including a Star Wars themed land. I personally do not agree with that because some of my favorite attractions are at that particular park.

Problem - Major park attractions are having temporary shutdowns due to cooling issues with the ride components.

Who - I believe this problem effects multiple parties. The first group that is affected are the maintenance teams, but ultimately the paying customer is who is affected by this issue.

2.) Title - Staffing problems at Florida air traffic control center causing delays at Orlando International Airport - From the Orlando Sentinel

 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/transportation/os-ae-air-traffic-controlers-government-shutdown-20190125-story.html

Situation - The busiest airports are experiencing gate and taxi delays, potentially due to the current government shutdown. These delays are being caused by staffing shortages at the larger Air Traffic Control centers because people are calling in sick in higher numbers than have been seen in the past. Federal workers like air traffic controllers have already missed 2 paychecks due to the shutdown, and the number of missing workers has jumped almost 7% compared to last year.

UPDATE: During the writing of this post, a deal was made to re-open the government and end the shutdown.

Problem - Flights are being delayed up to an hour in areas due to Air Traffic Control staffing issues. To counteract this, the FAA is letting fewer numbers of planes in the sky.

Who - I think due to the underlying issue causing the delays, both the controllers and the airline passengers share this problem equally. I can only see this problem getting worse if the shutdown continues.

3.) Title - Testing problems reported with Florida's new computer tests - From the Orlando Sentinel

 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/education/school-zone/os-testing-problems-floridas-computer-exams-fsats-post.html

Situation - In 2015, Central Florida schools had issues administering a new online FSA standardized test due to login problems. 35 of 67 school districts had issues connecting to the testing server/site. Some schools weree able solve the problem and complete the testing, but others were not as lucky. I did find an update to this story and they were pulled from the schools in this same year.

Problem - Testing coordinators had difficulty logging in and connecting the the testing network.

Who - The testing administrators had this issue at the overarching level, the testing coordinators were the ones having the issue in the classroom, and the some students were not able to complete the testing.

4.) Title - Subpar drafting is root of Orlando Magic’s problems - From the Orlando Sentinel

 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orlando-magic/os-sp-nba-insider-magic-drafting-0617-story.html

Situation - The Orlando Magic have suffered for 5 years with subpar drafting, and an inability to develop and keep those players on the roster. Between 2013 and 2015 the team had five picks in the top five, and none of them have panned out to be the all-star the team was hoping for. As a Magic fan, this is a very frustrating situation. The team has passed on prospects that have become all-stars for other teams.

Problem - Poor decision making in prime drafting positions, and an inability to make sound basketball decisions with regard to draft picks.

Who - The direct person that has this problem is the General Manager of the Magic. Ultimately the person that has to deal with it the most is the disgruntled fanbase.

5.) Title - SunRail trains delayed, one by 45 minutes, because of mechanical problems, agency says - From the Orlando Sentinel

 https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/sunrail/os-sunrail-train-delay-20180920-story.html

Situation - Two SunRail trains were delayed due to mechanical issues. The article is not specific about the type of mechanical issue, but did specify which trains were affected. Two separate trains had this issue, and caused more than a slight delay for the passengers.  It is unclear to me why they didn't specify what caused the delay, but they are not required to.

Problem - Mechanical issues caused over a 20-minute delay on one train, and 45-minute delay on another.

Who - The main person affected by this would be the passengers. These delays occurred at a main travel time in the morning, and I'm sure made people late for work or potentially even bigger appointments.

Thanks,
James

  1. You picked good articles with pretty clear issues. There seems to be a big problem today with reliable transportation, be it from lack of funding or poor planning. That's definitely a problem needing to be tackled. One thing that you could probably fix is to maybe keep the font consistent? It's not a big issue but it does look more professional.

  2. Hi James, thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading about some of the problems you researched. It is interesting to see how current issues such as the government shutdown can create opportunities for entrepreneurs to find solutions to issues. As you stated, someone is going to need to find a solution to problems caused by the government shutdown or things will only get worse. It is worth noting, however that solving problems regardless of regulatory climate is the hallmark of a good entrepreneur.
